Emergence #22

Inspired by the phenomenon of emergence that takes place in biological and chemical processes, Alba G. Corral uses creative coding to develop artworks in which an initial set of instructions generates a simulated ecosystem, or an endlessly evolving landscape. In these works, she considers the computer program as a co-author of each piece, given that it is driven to make its own “decisions” based on a series of pre-established parameters. In this sense, the output goes beyond the expectations of the artist and her original design, presenting unanticipated properties and behaviors. Conceptually, the artwork is a reflection on the unforeseen outcomes of the systems that govern our lives. It underscores how systems can be designed with precise rules, coded into programs, and automatically executed by machines for specific purposes—while also operating within complex environments, and interacting with other systems, living beings, and natural processes. The piece also points to the fact that when things don’t go as planned, emergence can lead to emergency, or to crises such as those happening now in global financial markets, in the ongoing pandemic, and through the undeniable effects of climate change.
